It’s no secret that people around the world have varied taste buds. From India to Europe and even the USA, dining habits differ widely. However, recently, several countries in the Asian belt have now defined their position as the global capital for late-night dining. According to a report by Chef’s Pencil, which is an international food magazine, it has ranked several cities for the availability of good restaurants late at night. As it happens, several Middle East Eastern and South Asian countries have topped the rankings!

Analysing 89 cities across the world with a calendar of more than 4,400 restaurants, several cities have now been ranked based on the median value of the last seating or last food order time. Yes, the study looked at several restaurants and checked the reservation apps to identify the seating times two or three weeks in advance. As it happens, from the Middle Eastern North Africa Region, Cairo, which is the capital of Egypt has topped the list with the last reservations being at 24:00. Making a dinner reservation well past midnight is quite easy and the average last seating time in this city is generally midnight. So, it’s certainly the world capital of late-night dining. However, several Indian and other Middle East Eastern cities have also made it to the top of the list!

Jeddah, which is the financial and commercial centre of Saudi Arabia, is another haven for late night diners. The average last seating time is till 23:30 taking the second spot worldwide. However, two Indian cities tied with this Saudi Arabian city and they are New Delhi and Mumbai. In fact, it’s quite common for people in New Delhi to have their dinner between 20:30 and 22:00. Many restaurants in popular areas like those in South Delhi remain open much later. Similarly for Mumbai, which is known for its lively nightlife often sees people dining between 21:00 and 23:00. As a result, restaurants particularly in areas of Colaba and Bandra remain open till midnight or even later.

It’s worth mentioning that other destinations like Dubai, Doha, and Muscat have also ranked high with the last seating time in the cities being 23:00. As it happens, they share the rank with Madrid, which is known for its late-night dining culture. And it ties with the capital of Greece, Athen. At this point, it’s worth mentioning that this last seating time is also common for the cities of Latin America, such as Mexico City, Montevideo, and Buenos Aires.
