In a significant move, the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, has acknowledged and approved the request of Mr. M. Anukathir Surya IRS (C&IT: 2013), currently serving as Joint Commissioner in the Office of Chief Commissioner (AR), CESTAT, Hyderabad to officially change his name and gender.

The decision, formalised through an office order dated 9 July 2024, marks a progressive step towards inclusivity and respect for individual identity within government bureaucracy. Mr. M Anukathir Surya, born on 20 October 1988, has expressed his desire for recognition under his new name and gender, which the competent authority has duly processed and approved.

“This change reflects Mr. M. Anukathir Surya’s personal identity and is a testament to the Ministry’s commitment to fostering an inclusive work environment,” stated the office order issued from the Department of Revenue, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, located at 47-B, North Block, New Delhi.

The Ministry’s decision ensures that henceforth, all official communications and records will address and record Mr. M. Anukathir Surya under his chosen name, affirming his gender as male. Secretary Shireesh Kumar Gautam has formally approved the officer’s right to self-identify and be recognized accordingly in the office order.
