Missing Scissors Trigger Major Disruptions At Japan’s New Chitose Airport; Leads To 36 Flight Cancellations

In an unexpected twist that felt more like a scene from a thriller, Japan’s New Chitose Airport was thrown into disarray last Saturday because of a pair of missing scissors. What seemed like a trivial oversight spiralled into a major disruption, causing 36 flight cancellations and delays for over 200 others.

New Chitose Airport, located in Chitose on Hokkaido, is Japan’s second-busiest airport. Known for its stringent security and well-organised operations, the airport is usually a model of efficiency. Every item within the airport, particularly sharp objects, must be accounted for at all times. Retail outlets, such as those in the airport, are required to keep scissors locked away in designated areas. Staff are allowed to use them when necessary but must return them immediately after use.

However, on that fateful Saturday, a retail outlet reported that a pair of scissors had gone missing. This simple mistake caused security to spring into action. The airport temporarily halted security checks for incoming passengers, sending the terminal into chaos. Passengers were forced to wait for hours, as security personnel began a thorough search for the missing item.

The situation escalated quickly. Authorities grew concerned that the scissors might have been taken with malicious intent. Given Japan’s emphasis on safety and security, this possibility could not be ignored. The airport had no choice but to suspend all security operations for nearly two hours. This delay created a backlog that was impossible to clear up quickly, leading to 36 flight cancellations and widespread disruption.

The timing couldn’t have been worse. The incident occurred during the Obon festival, a significant time in Japan when many people travel to honour their ancestors and visit family. Airports are usually at their busiest during this period, and the delays at New Chitose Airport only added to the pressure. Passengers were left frustrated, unable to board their flights or find alternative travel arrangements.

In the end, the missing scissors were found. They hadn’t been stolen or removed with any ill intent. Instead, they were located in the same retail shop where they had initially disappeared. Unfortunately, by the time they were found, the damage had already been done.

The chaos caused by their absence had resulted in a ripple effect that spread far beyond the airport. The impact was felt even outside the terminal. Some performances at a nearby music festival had to be cancelled due to the delays.
