On December 21, a multi-storey building collapsed in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali). According to Hindustan Times, a man’s body was recovered from the rubble earlier this morning, raising the death toll in this incident to two now. The first victim was identified as a 20-year-old woman from Himachal Pradesh. While the second victim is a male from Haryana’s Ambala.
The building housed a gym in the basement and had four floors. As per reports, the building collapsed because of the excavation in the adjacent plot by the owner. It is to be noted that the excavation work was carried out without any permission. According to the police, the land sank due to excavation and caused the building to collapse in Mohali.
For now, the building owners have been booked under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, according to Hindustan Times.
Expressing his sorrow at the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his sorrow on the incident and said that “rescue teams have been deployed at the spot”. He also mentioned that he is personally in “touch with the administration” as well.

At least 80 army personnel have been deployed to carry out this task. As per an NDTV report, 60% of the debris after the building collapse in Mohali has been cleared.
