A day after it hit Kerala on May 24, IMD has confirmed that monsoon arrived early in Maharashtra as well. About 14 days ahead of its usual date, the state witnessed its earliest monsoon arrival in 35 years! The southwest monsoon reached Maharashtra on May 25, and here’s all you need to know about it.

Earliest Monsoon Arrival In Maharashtra Since 1990

Marking one of the fastest transitions of the monsoon across peninsular India in recent years, Maharashtra witnessed the earliest onset of the annual rainfall season over the state in 35 years. According to the Hindustan Times, the southwest monsoon made an early entry into Maharashtra on Sunday.

Bringing heavy rain to several regions, the IMD said that the monsoon is expected to advance to Mumbai and other parts over the next three days. The monsoon has so far covered parts of South Konkan. It is expected to move further across the state in the next few days. The weather department also mentioned that the last time the southwest monsoon made an onset over Maharashtra was on May 20, 1990.

While talking to the Hindustan Times, a weather expert said that it is a “strong and rare arrival” of the monsoon in India. He mentioned that it “met all onset parameters and reached Maharashtra within 24 hours of entering Kerala.”
