Monsoon Mayhem In Mumbai: 4 Dead, Schools Closed, Trains, Buses Operational And Other Updates From The Waterlogged City

Year after year, it’s the same story come monsoon time. Heavy rains, followed by water-logging, followed by seemingly eternal traffic jams followed by public transport falling apart. Yesterday, Mumbai witnessed this for the umpteenth time. Heavy rain poured all over the city bringing transportation to a standstill. Four people lost their lives in rain-related incidents and schools and colleges are shut. The city is now slowly recovering from the mayhem of last night. Here are all the updates of the monsoon mayhem in Mumbai.

Monsoon Mayhem In Mumbai: Four Dead, Schools Closed

According to an article which was recently published by Hindustan Times or HT, as many as four people ended up losing their lives due to rain-related incidents. One of them was a 49-YO woman who ended up drowning in an open drain in Andheri.

Low-lying areas in Mumbai faced the worst of these torrential rains as waterlogging was waist-deep in many areas. The India Meteorological Department or IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai and nearby districts like Thane, Palghar and Raigad.

In addition to this, as many as 14 flights were diverted from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport or CSMIA. Harrowing visuals of last night have surfaced on X (formerly known as Twitter). Waterlogging abound, people were seen either stuck in awful traffic jams or wading through knee-deep waters in search of some transportation.

Trains And Buses Are Operational; Roads Slowly Cleared

After a night of incessant rain, the city is still reeling from impact. After being severely disrupted last night, they are now operational. Bus services, too, took a hit last night but are now operating normally. Waterlogged roads are now also mostly cleared.

This is not the first time that such severe waterlogging has crippled transportation in the city and, as anyone who has lived in the city for long will tell you, it won’t be the last time either. Mumbaikars will rage against the events of the last night for some time and move on because the boss needs the job done. That is, until the next time it happens.

In the meantime, everyone will sing about the unbreakable spirit of Mumbai without heeding the ecosystem of governmental irresponsibility that breeds such mayhem.
