More Than 50 Dead In Rain-Related Incidents Across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar & Uttarakhand

Nearly 50 people died and several were injured in lightning strikes and rain-related incidents across Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand on Thursday evening. Bihar was the worst hit with 25 deaths and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced compensation for the next of kin of the deceased.

The sudden rain showers on April 10 brought much-needed respite from the scorching heat across several Northern states. However, intense thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rains resulted in more than 50 deaths across Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand.

According to India Today, Bihar reported 18 deaths in Nalanda, two in Siwan, and one each in Katihar, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, and Jehanabad. Uttar Pradesh reported 22 deaths in rain-related incidents. As per Hindustan Times, at least 22 people were killed across 15 districts due to hailstorms and lightning. About three people each were killed in Fatehpur and Azamgarh districts, two each in Firozabad, Kanpur Dehat and Sitapur districts, one each in Ghazipur, Gonda, Amethi, Sant Kabir Nagar and Siddharth Nagar districts. Furthermore, one each died in Ballia, Kannauj, Barabanki, Jaunpur and Unnao districts.

One farmer passed away in Uttarakhand after being struck by lightning, and at least four people were injured in lightning strikes in Jharkhand.

Bihar CM Announces Ex Gratia Of ₹4 Lakh

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his sadness at the deaths and declared ex-gratia of ₹4 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed his condolences to the bereaved families. He has instructed officials to immediately distribute a permissible relief amount of ₹4 lakh to the families of the deceased.

After the downpour in North India on Thursday evening, heatwave conditions are likely to reduce significantly, especially around Delhi-NCR. Light rains are expected in several areas on Friday as well, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. Also, no heatwave conditions are expected for the next six days in Delhi-NCR.
