The incident unfolded around 10:30 AM near Grant Road Railway Station. CCTV footage from a nearby shop captured the terrifying moment when a section of the building abruptly crumbled, unleashing a torrent of debris. Thankfully, fire brigade officials have managed to pull 13 people to safety amidst the wreckage. However, a desperate race against time continues to locate any potential survivors who might be buried under the collapsed portion.

The relentless downpour has wreaked havoc on Mumbai’s public transport system. Both bus and railway services grounded to a halt on Friday due to severe waterlogging on roads and railway tracks. The relentless nature of the rain, punctuated by bursts of intense showers, caused significant disruptions and drastically slowed down commutes across the city.

IMD Predicts Continued Downpour

Central Railway’s Mainline services faced additional delays due to a separate technical problem plaguing a train engine. However, Western Railway officials attempted to ease commuter concerns by confirming that their suburban services were operating according to their regular schedule.

Adding another layer of worry to the city’s woes, the Mumbai centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a continuation of the downpour. Moderate to heavy rain is expected for the foreseeable future, raising concerns about further disruptions and the ongoing rescue operation at the collapsed building.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the perilous state of Mumbai’s ageing infrastructure, particularly during the monsoon season.
