Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 1 To Shut Down This Year
Terminal 1 of Mumbai Airport, operated by the Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), is set for major transformation. The terminal renovation plan will commence in a phased manner from November this year. According to The Economic Times, as part of this phase, the authorities plan to demolish the existing structure.
To minimise daily disruption and ensure a smooth transition, Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 2 and the Navi Mumbai International Airport will manage the capacity gap created during the demolition of Terminal 1. Of the 15 million passengers handled by Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 1, flights carrying 10 million passengers are likely to shift to the Navi Mumbai Airport by the end of October. The remaining will be accommodated at Mumbai’s Terminal 2.
Will Manage 20 Million Passengers Annually After Redevelopment
The renovation of Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 1 is likely to be completed in three years and a new terminal will be constructed as part of this project. Upon completion in 2028-29, the authorities believe that the airport will be able to manage 20 million passengers annually. This is a massive 42% boost from its current capacity.
As per a press release, the new Terminal 1 design will include a complete overhaul of the Passenger Terminal Building to cater to the airport’s domestic operations, while allowing future integration of international services. The redevelopment project promises state-of-the-art infrastructure upgrades that include district cooling, cutting-edge electrical substations, and a revolutionised baggage handling system.
The architecture of the new terminal will feature a biophilic design. Passengers will get to experience an oasis of indoor greenery, natural light, and open spaces. Drawing inspiration from the fluid motion of the ocean waves, its architecture will incorporate futuristic, wave-inspired forms.
