Starting next week, Mumbai’s Central Railway will roll out the Lucky Yatri Yojana, running for a duration of eight weeks. Here’s the fun part: the scheme will award daily cash prizes of ₹10,000 and a weekly bumper prize of ₹50,000. All you need to do is travel with a valid ticket or season pass. Yes, that’s it!

The twist? The winners will be selected randomly by ticket checkers at various stations. According to The Indian Express reports, they’ll check your travel credentials and, if you’re one of the lucky ones, you’ll receive your cash prize on the spot.

How It Works:

  • One lucky passenger will win ₹10,000 every single day. A bigger surprise, a whopping ₹50,000 cash prize, will be awarded weekly.
  • The selection is random, and it’s open to everyone. Whether you’re travelling with a single-journey ticket or a season pass, the prize is up for grabs!
  • It doesn’t matter which class you travel in, whether it’s first, second, or third; you could still be the lucky winner.

The Scheme Aims To Reduce Ticketless Travel

With Mumbai’s local trains being used by 40 lakh passengers on a daily basis, ticketless travel has become a serious problem. As per The Indian Express reports, 20% of commuters travel without tickets. It not only leads to revenue losses but also contributes to overcrowding on trains. As a result, about 4,000 to 5,000 ticketless passengers are caught every day during routine checks.

This is where the Lucky Yatri Yojana comes into play. By offering attractive cash incentives, Central Railway hopes to motivate commuters to travel with a valid ticket and, in turn, reduce the issue of ticketless travel. It’s a win-win; you get the chance to win cash, and the railways get more passengers adhering to the rules.

The best part is that you won’t have to pay extra to be part of this initiative. The entire program is completely funded by FCB Interface Communication Pvt Ltd. The initiative adds no additional cost for either the railways or the passengers. It is a part of a broader strategy by Central Railway to improve the overall travel experience for Mumbaikars.

So, next time you catch a local, make sure you’ve got a valid ticket or season pass.
