As of now, the residents endure a challenging 1.5 to 2-hour journey between the two locations. The new metro line is expected to significantly cut this travel time. This will provide much-needed relief to daily commuters.

As part of Mumbai’s expanding metro network, which will soon stretch to 337 kilometres, this project represents a critical infrastructure development. The ambitious project, with an estimated cost of ₹18,000 crore, will feature a unique alignment.

An underground section will run from Kanjurmarg to Ghansoli, transitioning to an elevated stretch from Ghansoli to Badlapur. However, the route’s complexity lies in its passage through ecologically sensitive zones, including Thane Creek, Parsik Hill, and the Flamingo Sanctuary.

Recognising the environmental challenges, MMRDA has proactively initiated steps to secure necessary clearances. A tender has been issued to appoint a consultant who will prepare a comprehensive environmental impact report.

The detailed project report, already approved by IIT Bombay, is awaiting final state government clearance. The authority aims to commence construction within twelve months of completing the environmental formalities.

Once the consultant is on board, MMRDA will expedite the approval process and begin the bidding procedures to ensure the project stays on schedule. This metro line symbolises Mumbai’s commitment to improving urban mobility, offering a sustainable and efficient transportation solution that promises to transform the daily commute for thousands of residents.
