The Mumbai Metro system is bracing for an expansion of large proportions this month with the inaugural run of the highly anticipated 9.8-km section of Metro Line 3 from Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Acharya Atre Chowk (Worli). The new connection is expected to offer a quick, air-conditioned, and hassle-free way of travelling for thousands of commuters every day on some of the busiest routes in the city.
Mumbai Metro Line 3 Expansion: Major Points
As reported by TOI, Mumbai Metro Line 3 is a completely underground line with a length of 33.5 km and is meant to relieve traffic on roads in Mumbai and packed local trains. The recently opened phase (Phase II) from BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk (Worli) runs through major areas such as Dharavi, Dadar, and Siddhivinayak Temple. Below are the highlights of the BKC-Worli Stretch
- Seven New Stations: Dharavi, Shitaladevi Mandir, Dadar Metro, Siddhivinayak, Worli, and Acharya Atre Chowk
- High Frequency: One metro every 7 minutes in peak hours and every 10 minutes in non-peak hours
- Fast Travel: Trim travel time from Aarey to Worli to a mere 36 minutes
- Affordable Fares: From ₹10 and up to ₹60 based on the distance
The Metro Line 3 extension is likely to transform commuting in South Mumbai by providing a fast, comfortable, and traffic-free option. The metro has 221 trips planned daily. The metro will significantly cut down travel time and decongest major arterial roads, such as the Western Express Highway and the Senapati Bapat Marg corridor.
Moreover, the integration of Metro Line 3 with other metro, railway, and bus networks will give people unbroken access to the rest of Mumbai.
