Mumbai’s metro infrastructure is rapidly growing! The second phase of Mumbai Metro Line 3 was inaugurated over the weekend and commuters have welcomed this extension with open arms. The extended phase witnessed more than 65,000 commuters in the first weekend. Scroll on to know more about this.

Record Ridership On Mumbai Metro 3 Extension

The newly inaugurated, extended underground Mumbai Metro Line 3 spans from Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli. According to the Times of India, over its first weekend, the line witnessed a ridership of more than 65,000 passengers.

Reports suggest that on Saturday, until 8 PM, 26,758 commuters had used the extended Mumbai Metro 3. This is a massive increase from the 15,911 who availed of its services on May 3 until 8 PM, before the extended metro operations began. On Sunday, a whopping 32,725 passengers travelled on the Aqua Line from Aarey JVLR to Acharya Atre Chowk till 8 PM. The overall ridership on both days was over 65,000.

While talking to Times of India, a Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd official said that the authorities witnessed consistent ridership on the first weekend. He added that the line is perfect for Mumbaikars, both for leisure and business purposes.

The Mumbai Metro 3 route has been operational between Aarey-JVLR and BKC since October. With this new extension, six metro stations—Dharavi, Sitaladevi Mandir, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, Worli and Acharya Atre Chowk–have been added to this line. The entire route is expected to be operational by mid-August.

Metro 9 Trials To Begin From Next Week

Besides Mumbai Metro 3, there is also some notable progress in Metro Line 9. As per reports, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that trial runs for this line would begin between Dahisar East and Kashigaon next week. Spearheaded by MMRDA, Mumbai Metro 9’s work has been split into two phases. The 4.5 km-long Dahisar East to Kashigaon route will begin operations by the end of the year.
