New York-Bound Air India Flight Diverted To Delhi After Bomb Threat
A Mumbai-New York Air India flight (AI 119) was forced to divert to IGI Airport in Delhi on Monday following a bomb threat. According to The Indian Express, the flight took off from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at around 2 AM on Monday.
Soon after, the Mumbai Airport authorities received a message on X (formerly Twitter) about a bomb on the New York-bound Air India flight. As per the instructions of the government’s security regulatory committee, the flight was diverted to Delhi. The plane landed in Delhi around 4 AM, and all passengers were safely disembarked by 4:10 AM.
Usha Rangnani, DCP IGI, told The Indian Express that all standard safety protocols are being followed diligently and the aircraft is currently stationed at the Delhi airport for further investigation. As per reports, authorities haven’t confirmed whether the threat was a hoax or not.
All Passengers Disembark Safely, Investigation Underway
As per the statement released by Air India, all passengers were safely deplaned after arriving at the Delhi airport. Reportedly, they are currently waiting in the holding area at the terminal. The passengers were asked to leave their bags on board for further investigation and safety purposes. Keeping in mind the seriousness of the threat, authorities have to ensure a thorough security inspection before being allowed to take off again.
In the past few months, several airlines have received bomb threats that have usually turned out to be untrue. One of the recent examples of this is the Mumbai-Frankfurt Vistara flight. The flight was diverted to Erzurum Airport in Turkey where passengers were struck for nearly 24 hours. In another case, a Hyderabad-bound IndiGo Flight from Jabalpur was diverted to Nagpur over a bomb threat. After a complete inspection, the plane was declared safe for further travel.
More details on the Mumbai-New York Air India are awaited as a probe is underway.
