The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation or the MSRDC has announced a significant traffic modification affecting the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The Mumbai-bound exit at Panvel, situated at the 1.2-kilometre mark, will undergo a complete closure for six months. The closure will be commencing on February 11, 2025. This closure is necessitated by extensive construction work at Kalamboli Circle, where the MSRDC is developing a new flyover and underpass as part of their junction improvement initiative.

According to an article that was recently published by The Free Press Journal or the FPJ, the restriction will be round the clock and will affect all vehicular traffic. It will encompass both light and heavy transport vehicles travelling towards Panvel, Mumbra, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust or JNPT.

The closure directive has been issued under the Motor Vehicles Act by Tirupati Kakade, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Navi Mumbai. DCP Kakade has emphasised the long-term benefits of this temporary inconvenience.

He stated that the completion of this project will resolve the persistent traffic congestion issues at Kalamboli Circle. To mitigate the impact of this closure, the Navi Mumbai Traffic authorities have implemented comprehensive diversions and alternative routes.

Motorists heading towards Panvel, Goa, or JNPT from the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will need to take a diversion at Konphata at the 9.6 km mark. Then, proceed via NH-48 and Palaspe Circle to reach their destinations.

For those travelling from Pune to Mumbai with intentions to access Taloja, Kalyan, or Shilphata, the prescribed route involves continuing straight from the 1.2-kilometre mark onto the Panvel-Sion Highway. Then, take a right turn beneath the Purusharth Petrol Pump flyover. After this, proceed via Roadpali and NH-48.

The MSRDC’s infrastructure enhancement project, whilst causing temporary disruption, aims to significantly improve traffic flow in this crucial junction. The closure will remain in effect until the completion of construction works. Authorities advise motorists to plan their journeys accordingly and follow the designated alternative routes to minimise travel disruptions.
