Tragically, one cub passed away a few hours after birth and the forest department officials are now closely monitoring the other three cubs.

The population of tigers in India is growing. On May 17, Mumbai’s Sanjay Gandhi National Park witnessed tigress Srivalli giving birth to four cubs. Unfortunately, one of them passed away after being crushed under the tigress’ body. The officials at the national park are “vigilantly monitoring the health of the tigress and the three remaining cubs.”

Tigress Gives Birth To 4 Cubs; One Passed Away

With 55 protected areas designated as tiger reserves, the tiger population of India rose to 3,682 in 2023. This is about 75% of the world’s wild tiger population. And now this number has increased some more. Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai witnessed the birth of four tiger cubs. Tigress Srivalli, also known as T24-C2, delivered four cubs in the national park. However, one of the cubs couldn’t survive and tragically passed away after being crushed under the tigress’ body.

Talking to Mid-Day, Deputy Conservator of Forest (DCF) Revati Kulkarni had said that Tigress T24-C2 (Srivalli) delivered four cubs in captivity at SGNP on May 17. Unfortunately, one of the four cubs died on May 18 and their team, alongside the veterinary officer, is vigilantly monitoring the health of the tigress and the three remaining cubs. The officials have observed that the tigress is taking care of the cubs and feeding them. As per reports, the cubs currently weigh around 2 kg.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park Witnessed Tiger Birth After 13 Years In 2023

Back in March 2023, Sanjay Gandhi National Park witnessed the birth of four new cubs after a wait of 13 years! According to reports, before this, the last time cubs were born in the park was in 2010. Tigress Srivalli, the same tigress, delivered these cubs. She was rescued from Moharli in 2022 and had mated with tiger Bajirao.

Now, this is what we call good news! India saw a 23.5% surge in tiger population between 2018 and 2022 and seeing this number grow is really amazing.
