“The state government has decided to introduce bike taxis in Maharashtra to generate employment for the youth and offer an affordable commuting option. The approval process is already underway,” Sarnaik stated.

Before the service becomes fully operational, the transport department is finalising comprehensive safety regulations to ensure passenger security. This is particularly important given recent increases in crime rates, with special attention being paid to the safety of women passengers.

The proposed fare structure for the bike taxi service has been set at ₹3 per kilometre, making it an economical option for daily commuters. To enhance safety measures, all vehicles will be required to have GPS tracking systems installed, and wearing helmets will be mandatory for all pillion riders.

Service providers looking to enter the market will need to maintain a minimum fleet of 50 two-wheelers to qualify for operating licences. This requirement aims to ensure a consistent level of service across the city.

“The government aims to generate 10,000 to 20,000 jobs through this scheme. A formal announcement will be made soon,” said Sarnaik, adding that the bike taxi service approval forms a key component of the chief minister’s 100-day action plan.

While the transport department anticipates completing the approval process within the month, officials acknowledge that certain safety protocols are still under development. These remaining regulations are being carefully crafted to address potential security concerns and ensure a smooth rollout of the service.

The introduction of bike taxis represents a significant addition to Mumbai’s transport infrastructure, potentially alleviating congestion whilst creating new employment opportunities in the transport sector.
