Mumbai Coastal Road To Get A “Green Necklace”? Zoo To Food Outlets, What’s In The Future?

The Mumbai Coastal Road is a massive 8-lane highway built along the western coastline of Mumbai. It is a giant bypass road built along the sea, and there are master plans to include entertainment hubs, food outlets and more along the Mumbai Coastal Road project. But the citizens are not happy. Here’s what they are demanding.

Mumbai Coastal Road To Get New Attractions? 

According to Hindustan Times, authorities recently finalised a New York-based landscape architecture firm to design the 130-acre “green necklace” along the Mumbai Coastal Road on reclaimed land. The master plan is expected to turn this land into an area featuring a zoo, nature theatre, children’s playscapes, food and beverage outlets, food trucks and other visitor infrastructure. But reportedly, the citizens are not happy.

They are requesting the authorities to use the reclaimed land to create a large native coastal forest instead of developing it as a visitor attraction. According to them, it is a golden opportunity for the city to create a large-scale forest that could serve both as climate infrastructure and public open space.

Citizens Want More Forest Cover 

According to Hindustan Times, the gardens planned on the reclaimed land along the southern stretch of the Coastal Road in Mumbai will have recreational spaces and sports facilities, too. The development may be similar to Central Park in New York, Hyde Park in London and the Botanic Gardens in Singapore.

The recreational hubs could form part of the development, but they would be integrated within the forest rather than turning the green space into an entertainment or recreational spot. The citizens are demanding maximum forest cover and minimum hardscape, with native, coastal-resilient, multilayered planting. All the plans are still in their initial stages, and it is still not confirmed what will actually happen.
