The 85-year-old iconic restaurant in Matunga is now facing threat of closure as the owners of the restaurant received a letter for eviction from the building’s landlord. Mani’s Lunch Home In Matunga Receives Notice For Eviction
According to a report by mid-day, the manager of the restaurant, K V S Rajamani, revealed that they have been paying rent regularly. So, the restaurant’s owners have sought legal opinion to combat this issue. So, they will send a reply to the notice. Earlier, another outlet of Mani’s Lunch Home had to shift base to Chembur after their outlet in Matunga underwent redevelopment.
Established in 1937, by K A Vishwanathan from Palakkad in Kerala, Mani’s Lunch Home brought authentic South Indian food from Tamil Nadu and Keralan to the plates of Mumbaikars. Their soft idlis, crispy medu vadas with sambhar and chutney refills were loved by patrons. During the harvest festival of Onam, it’s been a tradition for people in the city to queue up for Mani’s 22-dish lavish Onam Sadhya meals.
The 85-Year-Old Restaurant Is Every Matunga Resident’s Adda For South Indian Food
In fact, stationed near Ruia College, Mani’s Lunch Home has been the adda for college students to grab a cup of piping hot filter coffee during their break time. Even cricketers practising their game at Matunga Gymkhana Maidan stopped by at Mani’s for a quick bite. The tiffin outlet is an iconic spot among residents of Matunga thanks to its affordable South Indian meals that stay true to home.

So, when the news of the 85-year-old restaurant shutting shop reached the ears of patrons, it has truly been heartbreaking. Yes, the owner, Subramani Narayanswamy has received a notice to vacate the building by January 31, 2023. But with the restaurant taking over the issue in a legal manner, all hope is not lost.
