Mumbai’s Ganesh Visarjan: Over 10,000 Idols Immersed Till Late Evening On Sunday In A Grand Farewell

Thousands of devotees in Mumbai bid farewell to Lord Ganesh on Sunday. Over 10,000 Ganesh idols were immersed in water across the city by late evening. Bhushan Gagrani, Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), confirmed the massive turnout in a statement to TimesNow English. The visarjan marked the end of the first day and a half of Mumbai’s 10-day Ganesh festival.

Mumbai’s Ganesh Visarjan

The Ganesh festival started with much excitement on Saturday. Families and public groups called ‘sarvajanik mandals’, installed idols of the beloved deity in homes and community pandals. By Sunday afternoon, many household idols were ready for immersion. Devotees filled the streets with chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya!” These chants were accompanied by prayers asking Lord Ganesh to return early next year. The idols were taken to beaches and artificial water bodies throughout Mumbai.

Lord Ganesh holds a special place in the hearts of Mumbaikars. Known as the remover of obstacles, Lord Ganesh is also considered a bringer of prosperity. Gagrani expressed his pride in the city’s devotion. The BMC, along with the police, made all the necessary arrangements for smooth and safe immersions. Like in previous years, the city’s infrastructure was fully prepared for the event.

First Immersion On Sunday

The first immersion on Sunday was followed by plans for further events throughout the festival. These include the fifth-day immersion, Gauri Visarjan on the seventh day, and the grand finale on Anant Chaturdashi. For each of these days, the city has made traffic diversions to manage the crowd flow. The BMC and the police have arranged separate parking zones, mobile toilets, floodlights, bodyguards, and prayer platforms for devotees. VIP pandals have also been set up to accommodate special guests.

Gagrani emphasised that the city aims to provide a rich and incident-free Ganpati experience for all. The authorities have gone to great lengths to ensure safety and convenience. More than 12,000 personnel have been deployed to assist citizens with the immersion process. The idols are being immersed in both natural bodies of water and 204 artificial ponds spread across Mumbai and its suburbs.

Seventy-one control rooms have been established across the city to monitor the proceedings. Civic officials have arranged for 761 lifeguards to be on duty at the beaches. Additionally, 48 motorboats have been put into service to ensure the safety of those participating in the immersions. The BMC has also organised facilities to collect ‘nirmalya’—the flowers and other offerings that accompany the idols.
