Hotel’s History & Construction Challenges
The iconic Sea Rock Hotel was suburban Mumbai’s first five-star hotel. It was built by the Luthria family in 1978 and was quite famous among celebrities at that time. ITC took over the operations of this hotel in 1986. The hotel was one of the 12 targets of the 1993 terror attack. A suitcase bomb exploded in one of its rooms. Thereafter, following a dispute between its owners and ITC group, the hotel was shut down for business.
In 2005, the Claridges Hotel purchased the property for ₹300 crore. Later in 2009, IHCL acquired an 85% stake from them. The group planned to build a convention centre and commercial complex at the site, as per reports. However, the development never materialised due to litigation and environmental clearance issues. After IHCL acquired the 100% stake in the property in 2020, they now plan to revive the hotel after securing all the clearances.
