Mumbaikars, the city’s iconic Taraporewala Aquarium is all set to reopen with a facelift! The famous aquarium, which was shut during the COVID-19 pandemic, will be revamped as a modern, multi-storey complex. The Maharashtra Fisheries Department has approved a ₹296 crore redevelopment plan to transform it into a world-class tourism spot, and here’s all you need to know about it.
Mumbai’s Taraporewala Aquarium To Reopen After Major Transition
Located on Mumbai’s Marine Drive, Taraporewala Aquarium was inaugurated in 1951 by President Dr. Rajendra Prasad. It was named after philanthropist D.B. Taraporewala. The 70-year-old structure never opened after being shut during COVID-19. As per The Indian Express, in 2022, following a structural audit by the state’s Public Works Department, the aquarium building was declared unsafe.
The new Taraporewala Aquarium building will be a 12-storey structure covering 20,000 square metres. The authorities aim to transform the ageing marine aquarium into a world-class facility. They plan to build a new multi-storey, state-of-the-art building with an innovative design.
While talking about this project to The Indian Express, Maharashtra’s Fisheries And Port Development Minister Nitesh Rane said that this redeveloped aquarium will boost tourism in Mumbai. He further added that it will also bring people closer to nature and promote education.
