After nearly six decades of delays, Mumbai’s long-anticipated Madh-Versova Bridge project is finally progressing. Proposed in 1967, the project aims to link the Madh and Versova jetties through a 2.06-kilometre cable-stayed bridge, significantly reducing the current 90-minute, 22-kilometre road journey to under five minutes.

The Madh-Versova Bridge will be a vital link between the western suburbs, promising faster and more direct coastal access. Designed with a 100-metre stainless steel pylon, the bridge will follow a cable-stayed structure to enhance durability and aesthetics. The BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) is awaiting a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Forest Department before approaching the Bombay High Court for further approvals.

According to Mid-day, the BMC has prioritised minimising the environmental impact of the construction, ensuring that the project complies with all necessary clearances. The bridge’s design also aligns with Mumbai’s broader coastal infrastructure goals.

Shorter, Faster Commute Ahead For Mumbai’s Coastal Travellers

The bridge will drastically cut travel time between Madh and Versova from over 90 minutes to just five. Currently, residents rely on lengthy road routes or ferries to travel between these points. Once complete, the bridge will benefit thousands of daily commuters and local fishermen who depend on coastal access for their livelihood.

Cost Estimates And Local Support

The estimated cost for the Madh-Versova Bridge ranges between ₹2,395 crore and ₹3,984 crore. Despite the high investment, the project has garnered strong support from local communities. Residents view the bridge as a much-needed upgrade to Mumbai’s ageing transport links.

With environmental assessments in progress and legal clearances underway, the BMC is keen to begin construction soon. The project is expected to become a landmark structure and a major achievement in the city’s coastal infrastructure development.
