Myanmar-Bangkok Earthquake: Death Toll Crosses 1600, Thailand Returns To Normalcy And Other Updates

A devastating earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, March 28, 2025. It has managed to claim at least 1,644 lives, according to the country’s military leadership. There are even fears that the final death toll could rise dramatically. The US Geological Survey, or the USGS, has modelled potential casualties exceeding 10,000 from the powerful tremor. Thailand was also significantly impacted by this. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about the Myanmar-Bangkok Earthquake.

Myanmar-Bangkok Earthquake: All The Latest Updates

The earthquake hit near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, and measured a whopping 7.7 magnitude on the Richter Scale. Rescue efforts face significant challenges as debris and damaged infrastructure hamper access to affected areas.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has highlighted severe shortages of medical supplies throughout the isolated nation. Health workers in Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw and southern regions struggled to treat the wounded.

The international community has responded swiftly. India deployed a 118-member medical and search team alongside two aid ships. China has sent 37 rescue specialists equipped with life-detection technology and emergency supplies.

In neighbouring Thailand, the earthquake’s impact has extended to Bangkok, where a 30-storey building under construction collapsed, resulting in 17 deaths. Thai authorities report 32 people injured and 83 still unaccounted for at the site.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra stated that no other structures in the capital suffered similar damage, noting the country “has returned to normalcy” despite the tremors felt in Bangkok

What Caused The Earthquake?

Other nations providing assistance include Russia, South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore, whilst the European Union has pledged €2.5 million in emergency funding. US President Donald Trump described the disaster as “terrible” and committed to providing aid..

The catastrophe represents Myanmar’s most powerful earthquake in over a century. Geological experts attribute it to movement along the 1,200-km Sagaing fault. The region’s high seismic activity stems from its position at the convergence of four tectonic plates.

These are the Eurasian, Indian, Sunda, and Burma microplates. Initial data suggests the earthquake resulted from a “strike-slip” movement consistent with the Sagaing fault’s typical activity.
