Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has inaugurated Asia’s longest double-decker flyover in Nagpur. This marks a major milestone in India’s urban infrastructure development. The 5.6-kilometre-long structure is part of Nagpur’s transformation into a more connected and efficient city. It is expected to ease traffic congestion significantly and drive economic growth in the region.

The flyover has a unique four-tier design. It features a Metro line at the top, followed by a flyover beneath it, then a railway track, and finally a road at the base. This advanced layout allows the busy roads of Kamptee and Chhindwara in Nagpur to manage traffic more smoothly. Motorists can now travel from Kamptee to Nagpur airport in just 20 minutes, saving a lot of time compared to the previous travel duration.
The project has been completed at a cost of ₹573 crore. It stands out not only for its innovative structure but also for its eco-friendly features. Gadkari pointed out that the flyover integrates green technologies that promote air and light flow, making it a sustainable development.
Boosting Local Economic Activity
The flyover is expected to play a significant role in boosting local economic activity. By improving connectivity, it is likely to attract investment to the region. Improved road safety is another benefit, as the flyover will help streamline the flow of vehicles on one of Nagpur’s busiest routes.
Gadkari also shared his vision for future projects, noting the potential of using ultra-reinforced concrete technology. This technology, currently used in advanced infrastructure projects in countries like Singapore and Malaysia, could be a game-changer for India’s road and transport infrastructure.
Nagpur is taking a big step toward becoming a smart city. This new flyover serves as a model for modern urban planning. The double-decker structure is not only a solution to traffic woes but also a showcase of how innovative designs can reshape cities. Other Indian cities could soon follow Nagpur’s example, adopting similar projects to modernise their transportation networks.
With the inauguration of this flyover, Nagpur is on its way to becoming a more accessible, efficient, and economically vibrant city. The project reflects the broader vision of India’s urban development strategy, where smart infrastructure is key to future growth.
