Authorities are reportedly planning that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project might get a spur line to NMIA. However, do not get your hopes up as the plan is still in its initial phases. As per a report by Mid-Day, a proposal has been sent to the Railway Board for consideration.

If the plan materialises, this spur line would connect India’s first bullet train corridor with Navi Mumbai International Airport. It should be noted that NMIA is set to become the second international airport serving the Mumbai metropolitan region after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Its inauguration was reportedly delayed but may take place next month.

The Plan Might Boost Connectivity

According to the same report, the new line could potentially reduce travel time for passengers travelling between Navi Mumbai and Gujarat. However, railway officials have not issued any formal confirmation yet. If approved, this spur line could make NMIA a major intermodal transport hub, integrating air, rail and road travel for seamless and faster passenger movement.

Work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor is progressing steadily. Several milestones have been achieved: In Maharashtra, excavation for the Bandra-Kurla Complex station ( the only underground station on the 508 km route) is nearly 75% complete. Whereas in Gujarat, construction of steel bridges continues, with nine of 17 major bridges already launched. The project is estimated at over ₹1.08 lakh crore and is funded by Japan through JICA.

As per the same report, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav confirmed that the first phase of this bullet train between Vapi and Sabarmati will open by December 2027. Plus, the full corridor from Mumbai to Ahmedabad is expected to be operational by December 2029.
