Aviation officials have confirmed that the Navi Mumbai International Airport or the NMIA is scheduled for inauguration very soon. This comes at the heels of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation or the DGCA gave a positive assessment of the development of the airport. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about this new airport that is soon to open in Navi Mumbai in May.
Navi Mumbai International Airport Likely To Open On This Date
According to an article that was recently published by the Hindustan Times or the HT, the new international airport in Navi Mumbai will likely open on May 15, 2025. Tuesday’s inspection was attended by key officials including Vipin Kumar, Chairman of the Airports Authority of India or the AAI.
Prakash Nikam, Regional Director of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, evaluated the facility’s readiness. The NMIA is operated by NMIAL, a joint venture between Adani Airport Holdings or AAHL and the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra or the CIDCO.
A DGCA representative cited in the HT article stated that NMIA’s preparedness has been assessed. The management will submit all permit applications by March 5, 2025. After that, the DGCA will proceed accordingly.
Some Approvals From DGCA Were Still Pending
This follows a December evaluation that had identified certain concerns after the airport’s commercial flight validation test on December 29, 2024. The test was done using an IndiGo A320 aircraft on runway 08/26. Officials report that 90 per cent of previous approach issues have now been resolved.
The aerodrome licence application is scheduled for submission on February 28, 2025. Following this, the DGCA will approve the Aeronautical Information Publication or the AIP by early March, with publication expected before 30 April. The AIP contains essential documentation providing critical flight operation information for pilots and operators navigating the airspace.
Operations are projected to commence after the AIP publication, with May 15 as the target date for the first flights. NMIA’s initial capacity is expected to handle 10-12 million passengers annually, comprising approximately 9 million domestic and 3 million international travellers.
