British passport holders will soon have to adhere to new EU travel rules when travelling to Europe. The reforms, set to be implemented in 2026, require UK travellers to register themselves under two major systems: the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). The measures are designed to enhance border security and facilitate travel within the Schengen Zone.
Understanding The EU Travel Rules: EES and ETIAS
UK citizens can currently travel to Schengen-area nations visa-free for 90 days. With the new rules, however, travelling to places like France, Spain, Greece, and Italy will be more complicated.
The new EU travel regulations introduce two new systems that British passport holders must comply with before entering the Schengen Zone.
The EES (Entry/Exit System) is an electronic system intended to replace passport stamps and record the travel history of non-EU travellers. In this system, travellers will be required to register their fingerprints and facial biometrics when entering or exiting the EU at an automated kiosk. The registration will be valid for three years, or until a traveller receives a new passport.
The system is designed to enhance border protection, put an end to overstays, and simplify airport processes.
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a visa waiver programme requiring non-EU visitors, including British nationals, to receive authorisation before travel. It is simple—travellers will be required to complete an online application with personal information, travel records, and planned stay.
The three-year ETIAS visa waiver will permit multiple visits to the EU for short stays. The application fee will cost £6 for those aged between 18 and 70, with free applications available for children and people above 70 years of age.

Where And When Will These Rules Apply?
The EU travel rules will affect travellers visiting all 29 nations in the Schengen region, such as Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, and Portugal. Scandinavian nations such as Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Eastern European countries such as Romania, Hungary, and Poland. Lastly, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Iceland.
While the EES and ETIAS were initially slated for earlier implementation, they have been repeatedly delayed. The EES system will be implemented in 2026, followed by ETIAS implementation in 2027.
How To Apply For ETIAS
It will be easy to apply for ETIAS online. Travellers will require:
- A current British passport (with not less than three months remaining validity)
- An email address and telephone number
- Means of payment for the £6 charge (where applicable)
The application will request education, employment, travel history, and security-related information. Approval should be within minutes for the majority of travellers, but it is advisable to apply at least two to three weeks in advance.
The new EU travel regulations represent a major shift for UK residents who are about to take trips to Europe. Though these added measures may be viewed as an inconvenience, they are intended to further boost security and make travelling more efficient.
