More About New York City’s Attraction, Vessel

New York City’s public attraction, Vessel, is a honeycomb-shaped structure with climbable, zigzagging stairs. The structure is a 150-foot tower that stands as tall as 16 stories with 154 flights of stairs and 80 landings for visitors to climb. Thomas Heatherwick designed this structure. The Vessel was fabricated in Venice.

Construction of this structure started in April 2017 and was opened to the public in March 2019 as the centrepiece of the Hudson Yards development.

The structure was closed in January 2021 following three suicides. However, in May 2021 it reopened again, but after 2 months it was indefinitely closed again as another suicide happened.

Safety Measures Installed At Vessel

The structure reopened in October 2024 with additional safety barriers installed. Steel mesh barriers have been installed in certain sections from floor to ceiling as a crucial safety measure. However, the top level remains closed.

The structure has been reopened as a ground-level base, with mesh barriers installed to preserve the unique experience and essence of the Vessel. The balconies are covered with mesh netting, and some walkways to the top level are inaccessible altogether. The flexible mesh netting allows people to use their phones to capture structure, interior, and view, but not their bodies.
