No More Free Bags! Southwest Airlines Announces Major Policy Shift

Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines recently made the significant announcement of changing its long-time baggage policy. From May 28 onwards, the airline will begin charging for checking bags. This will end the company’s practice of letting passengers check two bags at no cost. This change represents a dramatic break from what had been one of the distinguishing characteristics of Southwest Airlines compared to its competitors.

Southwest Airlines built its reputation over the years by offering free checked baggage, which was highly valued by the majority of travellers. Under the new policy, Business Select fare passengers, Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred members, and select credit card holders will continue to enjoy this old baggage policy. However, the rest will now be charged to check their bags, although the airline still hasn’t announced definite pricing.

While Southwest Airlines is not alone in charging for checked bags, the move has come as a shock to many of its loyal passengers.

The carrier had justified its free baggage policy earlier, citing that it retained customers. However, economic strain and competition in the market appear to have brought about this change.

According to AP News, Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan said that the changes are intended to make the company more financially competitive. Analysts have estimated that charging for checked bags could bring in $1.5 billion a year, but some fear it will repel price-sensitive travellers.

Mixed Reactions Among Passengers And Competitors

The decision has created controversy among regular flyers. Some of the passengers have voiced discontent, indicating that they deliberately opted for Southwest Airlines due to its baggage policy. Others are contemplating switching to other airlines based on overall travel expenses.

Delta Airlines’ president said that travellers who once opted for Southwest because of free bags might now look elsewhere. Industry analysts think this is one aspect of a larger trend where airlines seek other sources of revenue besides ticket prices.

As Southwest Airlines makes these changes, travellers will have to adapt their travel schedules accordingly. Frequent checkers of bags might have to balance the bag fees with the ticket prices of the airline.

This change indicates the changing scenario of the airline industry, where extra charges are becoming increasingly prevalent.

Whether or not Southwest Airlines’ move will prove to be good for the company or drive away its loyal patrons is yet to be determined.
