No Survivors Left After Passenger Plane Carrying 61 Crashes Near Sao Paulo In Brazil; Cause Unclear

A tragic plane crash in Brazil claimed the lives of all 61 people on board. The regional turboprop plane, made by ATR, went down near Sao Paulo on Friday. Video footage shared on social media showed the plane spinning out of control before crashing behind a cluster of trees near houses. A large plume of black smoke followed the crash, indicating the severity of the impact.

Local officials in Valinhos, close to the crash site, confirmed the grim news. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, addressing the nation at an event shortly after the incident, asked for a minute of silence to honour the victims. The crash left no survivors, and while one home in a nearby condominium complex was damaged, fortunately, no residents were hurt.

The plane belonged to Voepass, an unlisted airline. It had taken off from Cascavel, in the state of Parana, and was bound for Sao Paulo’s main international airport. The plane crashed in the town of Vinhedo, about 80 kilometres northwest of Sao Paulo. The airline stated that it could not provide further information about the cause of the crash at that moment.

Aircraft Involved In The Crash Identified

The aircraft involved in the crash was identified as an ATR 72-500 turboprop. ATR, a company jointly owned by Airbus and the Italian aerospace group Leonardo, manufactures this model. FlightRadar24, a flight tracking service, listed the plane with the registration PS-VPB.

In response to the crash, Sao Paulo’s state fire brigade quickly deployed seven crews to the scene. Despite their swift action, there was little they could do, as the crash had already claimed the lives of all passengers and crew.

One person, Adriano Assis from Rio de Janeiro, narrowly escaped this tragic fate. He was denied entry to the doomed flight, a twist of fate that spared his life. His story adds a haunting layer to the tragedy, highlighting the unpredictable nature of such events.
