North Korea is all set to open Wonsan-Kalma coastal tourist zone, a new tourist spot in the country. This development is being called a big step forward for the country’s tourism plans. However, as per the latest reports, it will only be open to local tourists for now and there is no clear date on when it will welcome foreign travellers. Scroll on to know more about it.
North Korea Gets Its First Tourist Zone
According to The Economic Times, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected and held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially launch the Wonsan-Kalma coastal tourist zone on Tuesday. This new tourist zone has beaches, hotels, sports facilities, restaurants, and more. It can host around 20,000 guests and will give them a true coastal experience.
The tourist spot will open for local North Korean tourists from July 1. There is no official communication about when the tourism facilities will open for foreign travellers. While Russian and Chinese tourists have been visiting North Korea, the country only welcomed foreign tourists earlier this year after hitting pause on all international arrivals in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The travel was paused again in March 2025, with exception to tourists from Russia and China.
A Move To Boost Tourism In The Country
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called Wonsan-Kalma coastal tourist zone “one of the greatest successes this year” and a step towards building a stronger tourism industry in the country. He visited the facility with his daughter Kim Ju Ae and his wife Ri Sol Ju.
North Korea’s Wonsan-Kalma beach resort will be the country’s biggest tourist site. According to the local media reports, this facility was developed as a tourism hub and a way to revive the ailing economy of the country. It was one of his most talked-about tourism projects and the authorities there plan to build large tourist sites in other parts of the country as well.
