Northern Railway continues to develop new plans and approved projects under the ‘Viksit Bharat Viksit Railway’ initiative across the zone. The key aim is to enhance movable assets and fixed infrastructure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s launch of the Amrit Bharat Scheme is a significant step to focus on redeveloping railway stations over the Northern Railway zone.
Northern Railway’s Plan For Redeveloping 104 Stations Has Been Approved

Railway stations under this project will undergo a major transformation. Key aspects of the makeovers are to offer updated services for comfortable experiences and provide a clean and modern feel to passengers, according to Northern Railway’s Press Release. The big-budget project of redeveloping Northern Railway’s stations has begun already. With the much-needed approval for 104 stations, the project is currently ongoing rapidly.
This significant redevelopment project falls under the Amrit Bharat Scheme for the 2024-25 fiscal year. The allocated budget is ₹1,538 crore. For the first phase of transformation, stations from Non-Suburban and Suburban group categories will be revamped. Till now, 16 stations are all ready for a major makeover. Among 104 stations across the Northern Railway zone, feasibility studies are continuing for 21 additional stations.
Stations included in the redevelopment are from Northern Railway’s five divisions such as Ambala, Delhi, Firozpur, Lucknow, and Moradabad. These are spread over Northern India’s six states and two Union Territories. Delhi’s bustling stations are on the list for revamping such as the satellite townships of Ghaziabad, Bahadurgarh, Ballabhgarh, and Faridabad.

- Haryana
- Jind
- Mansa
- Rohtak
- Sonipat
These townships are also a part of the crucial approved plan for passenger movement and goods loading: Dhampur, Gajraula, Hapur, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, and Shamli.
Transformations will be made in renowned tourist and pilgrimage locations such as
- Anandpur Sahib
- Ayodhya
- Baijnath Paprola
- Garh Mukteshwar
- Kalka
- Prayag Junction
- Shimla
- Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra
- Varanasi

As a part of the project, these stations will get foot overbridges, new entry gates, escalators, elevators, and designated areas for food courts, offices, and shopping stores. In addition, a major priority is to add facilities catering to the needs of Divyangjan.
