When you think of South Indian dishes, the first thing that pops up in your head is either dosa or idli. These are the most commonly preferred dishes by non-south Indians. However, when you ask about the most preferred South Indian dishes to any native, you might be surprised to hear their response. We experienced this scenario while interviewing the charming R. Madhavan for one of our Power Breakfast episodes. Check out his favourite South Indian dish for breakfast.
R. Madhavan’s Favourite South Indian Breakfast Dish
We relished a healthy breakfast with the health-conscious actor Madhavan for this Power Breakfast episode powered by Centrum. Kamiya wanted to learn about the usual breakfast items at his South Indian household. He replied, “Believe it or not, Kanji,” and described the traditional dish.
He explained that it is a simple and delicious boiled rice dish. It is fermented overnight in the same water it was boiled in. To that, a tadka is added along with fresh yoghurt to make it a bit tangy. Lastly, to enhance the simple and savoury taste of Kanji, freshly chopped onions and chillies along with salt are added.
After describing the dish, Madhavan said, “It’s the most cooling, filling and calming breakfast that I can have.” We have to make this yummy South Indian breakfast dish at home soon.

Is Kanji Nutritious?
After learning about this new dish, Kamiya was curious whether Kanji had any nutritional value. Madhavan assured us that this dish is incredibly nutritious and excellent for supplying energy. Does he feel energetic after relishing a generous serving of Kanji?
Well, our guest revealed that a wave of sleep soon hits him right after he consumes Kanji! In Madhavan’s defence, he said that the rice ferments for longer than it should. This might make him feel excessively sleepy and lethargic. Both of them had a great laugh about this.
