Weather conditions have intensified in Rajasthan over the weekend. Pictures and videos of streets covered in hailstones surfaced on social media and severe crop damage was reported in many areas. On Saturday, Parveen Kaswan, an Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer, also shared a video of Churu city where open lands, houses and streets were captured covered in hailstones, appearing almost snow-like. In his X (formerly Twitter) post, Parveen Kaswan shared a video with a caption, “No this is not Kashmir. This is Churu of Rajasthan. Which sees upto 50 degrees in summer. Such extreme weather!!” He also shared another video where a man can be seen removing the snow from his doorstep. He added, “Look at the ice rained from sky. My heart goes for the farmers who will face these vagaries of nature.”
Many netizens in the comments section of the post wondered if this was an effect of climate change or if it was something normal in the region. Some mentioned that “hailstorms are normal for the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan.” This hailstorm in Churu came after sudden rainfall over the weekend wreaked havoc in many areas of Rajasthan.

According to the Hindustan Times, besides Churu, several regions of Rajasthan also witnessed rain along with a hailstorm on Saturday. This included Bharatpur, Dholpur, Alwar, and areas of Jhunjhunu and Tijara. Furthermore, the meteorological department also reported that the cold winds caused a drop in temperatures in all these areas. Some regions, including Shekhawati, have seen a drop of 2-3 degrees celsius in temperature over the weekend.
The Jaipur Meteorological Centre recorded 28 mm of rainfall in Churu, 18 mm in Jhunjhunu’s Chirawa, 14 mm in Malsisar, 13 mm in Buhana, 10 mm in Tijara, and 10 mm in Taranagar.

The sudden and intense weekend downpour and hailstorm in parts of Rajasthan has forced the meteorological department to issue an alert in the affected regions.
