If you felt that this October was a bit hotter than usual, then you aren’t the only one! According to NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), October 2024 was the second-warmest October on record. Closer home, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) revealed that this October was the warmest in India in the last 124 years!
NASA Reveals 2024 Saw The Second-Warmest October Worldwide
The world experienced the second warmest October in 2024, a recent report by NASA’s GISS revealed. It showed that the global average temperature was 1.32°C higher than the 1951-1980 long-term average. According to India Today, while October 2024 was a little cooler than October 2023, the difference was minimal. That’s why the agency ended up tying the two months for the record.
This consistency underscores the issue of climate change and the significant challenges it poses for the planet. The consistent upward trajectory in global temperatures has been mainly attributed to human activities. Deforestation and burning of fossil fuels continued to be the leading cause of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, India Today reported.
India Experiences The Hottest October In 124 Years
In another report, IMD reported that October 2024 was the warmest October in India since 1914. According to Business Standard, with an average temperature of 26.92°C in October 2024, the expected temperature in the month rose by 1.23°C — the highest in the last 124 years! The warm weather conditions continued into November as well. In the first half of the month, authorities have already reported above-average temperatures.
Monthly mean Temperature (average of daily minimum and maximum temperature) for the month of October over entire country is the highest during the year 2024 in the last 124 years (1901-2024). It is also the highest over Central India.#imd #weatherupdate #meanTemperature… pic.twitter.com/uAE8orUvZ1

For this report, IMD analysed records from 1901. Delhi, particularly, experienced its warmest October in 73 years. As per reports, monthly maximum and minimum averages in the city were recorded as 35.1°C and 21.2°C, respectively.
