Kolkata is a city that is famous for preserving history and culture beautifully. Decades have passed and a lot of things have transitioned, but most people’s views about the ‘City of Joy’ meet at the same point. From its development to new opportunities, most locals and outsiders tend to be on the same page. This time, a tourist visited Kolkata and had an unpleasant experience overall. His journey was so disappointing that he called Kolkata “the dirtiest city.” But what led to such strong claims against this renowned city? Let’s find out.
The Tourist Called Kolkata “The Dirtiest City In India”
X user DS Balaji (@balajidbv) shared a thread of personal experiences following his recent trip to West Bengal’s capital. Which places triggered such uncomfortable travel diaries?
Kolkata – The Dirtiest City of India
ThreadSharing my personal experience, of the recent visit to the Capital of West Bengal. The most unhygienic experience I have had in an Indian city.

According to information provided on this X thread, the tourist went to some of the city’s most famous places and local areas. Seeing dirt and untidy corners, he called his trip “The most unhygienic experience I have had in an Indian city.”
This is not some Starving African city, it’s Kolkata.
A busy Metro station, Called Sealdah. And a market area called Bada Bazaar.
Open gutters, and urine smell everywhere. Can’t breathe properly.
While locals were enjoying breakfast from a shop on top of the gutter nearby. pic.twitter.com/R7FwudVsV4

Sharing clips of the bustling Sealdah metro station and the popular Bara Bazar market in North Kolkata, he added that these places are in Kolkata and not any “starving African city.” He found difficulties in breathing properly as there were open gutters and urine stench all around.
Vendors were sitting on top of a gutter and selling things In Kolkata.
No, I have never seen it anywhere else in India. No matter how poor, or bad Infrastructure. And I have travelled a lot.
It’s just a lack of civic and hygiene in the city, which is so sad to see. pic.twitter.com/UAUdvU2ja8

Pictures show how a local food vendor sat on the top of a gutter lid. Explaining the miserable situation, DS Balaji shared how he never saw an instance like this anywhere in the country. He is an avid traveller and he came across nothing similar even in poor places with bad infrastructure. He highlighted that there is a lack of hygiene in Kolkata.

This is a Vegetable market from where vendors distribute to the entire city.
The food which you will eat is kept on a gutter, filthy smelling floor. While people are just fighting, abusing and spitting here and there.
I didn’t eat proper food for two days of stay in Kolkata. pic.twitter.com/nrS4QhLaSU

The X user shared pictures of a busy market in the city and showed its unhygienic conditions. The vegetables were kept on top of a gutter around an unsanitary-smelling floor. In between all these, people were seen “fighting, abusing and spitting here and there.” His trip to Kolkata was so horribly intolerable that he could not eat proper food for two days.
Most buildings look like they won’t survive a strong earthquake.
Irritating honking that can give most humans a headache.
Can’t book Uber, Rapidos because local Taxis beat them. Hence drivers don’t like to go into the most busy areas.
End up with local Taxis that cost double. pic.twitter.com/yIq7UoIj18

Sharing snippets of decades and centuries-old buildings in the city, he added that most of these establishments cannot survive the consequences of a strong earthquake. He pointed out another major issue of local taxi operations in many busy areas. He could not book Uber or Rapido as drivers don’t like to pick up commuters from these places because local taxi drivers beat them. Taking advantage of people’s distress, taxi drivers end up charging a bomb.
People seemed to be in some high survival mechanism. Everyone is trying to grab money from outsiders.
Taxi would charge you extra, if you ask them to drop 50m close to the hotel. And would abuse you if you don’t comply with their bullying. pic.twitter.com/6yy7uanVTk

A Long Tale Of Miserable Experiences
I literally lost thousands of rupees inside Kaali Ghaat temple.
Local Pandas surrounded me for VIP Darshan and as we kept moving. They tried to sell things, like Divya Coin, Prasad. Even inside the Temple, the priest would get agitated if you don’t pay them.

DS Balaji visited the iconic Kalighat Temple to offer prayers to Maa Kali. This renowned mandir makes its way to most tourists’ itineraries. Unfortunately, he lost thousands of rupees here. He discovered how pandas tried to sell things such as prasad and coins.
I visited this famous shop too, it was literally on top of a running gutter. This pic is from Google.
I couldn’t take a picture, as he got angry and started abusing me. I ate at another Pappi Changani nearby, which looked a little hygienic.

If you know about Kolkata’s local culinary landscape, you must have watched videos of the angry Chhangani club kachori wala. The X user headed to this infamous shop and was shocked to see the man selling kachori on top of a running gutter. Saddened by the vendor’s abusive behaviour, he ate at a nearby shop.

I personally felt Kolkata to be the most depressing, low energy, low frequency city.
I may have visited all the wrong places, at all at the wrong times.
As a caring aware Indian citizen I wish the best, for this city. May it improve, grow and build like others.
Thanks 🙏

Based on his personal journey and the places he visited in Kolkata, he felt that the ‘City of Joy’ is the most depressing city in India. Also, it is low on energy and frequency.
Still Kolkata is much better than other cities of India. The areas of Park street, Maidan, Sadan and then the salt lake and Newtown are no less than world class cities.
— Rajat Agarwala (@RjtAg222) November 6, 2024
Concluding his X thread of visiting Kolkata, he highlighted that famous locations such as Park Street, Maidan, Rabindra Sadan, Salt Lake, and New Town are grand like world-class cities.
Do Netizens Agree?
Both locals and tourists who travelled to the city in the past shared similar opinions about Kolkata. From filthy areas to improper untidy airport washrooms, people agree to the fact that most places in the Bengal capital are covered in dirt on every corner. Here’s how they responded to the post.
When i first visited the city, The female washroom of Airport… uff, the first experience was enough to tell me how the city would be.
A garbage bin of 3.5/4 feet. Wet floor covered with Hair all across,no place to keep your stuff.
I couldn’t believe, this was airport— Dr Pushyanti (पश्यन्ती) Shukla (@DrPashyantiS) November 6, 2024
I first visited Kolkata in 2011, and as I stepped out of Howrah Station, I nearly avoided stepping in human waste. It was quite an unexpected experience, and it seems that, unfortunately, things haven’t changed much since then.

Kolkata has some kind of dark matter that tries to suck the life out of you.
Mumbai (which is also dirty, dusty and generally unpleasant), has an energy field from which you can draw.
I like Kolkata. But it is getting worse with each passing year.

I am born, brought up, schooled ( in a prestigious Birla school) in kolkata, did grad and post grad from cities outside Kolkata.
I don’t need to prove my love for my city but also can’t ignore the truth you just spoke.
Unfortunate and painful TRUTH & FACE of my city 😣— Sweta R (@SwetaR5) November 5, 2024
Calcutta is the nastiest city in India.
