MahaRail (Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation) has successfully completed the long-awaited Turbhe Rail/Road Over Bridge (ROB) widening project on the bustling Sion Panvel Highway. This crucial infrastructure enhancement involves the addition of two lanes on each side of the Turbhe ROB, a move aimed at alleviating traffic congestion along this prominent transportation corridor.

The project encompasses the construction of three arms, each featuring two lanes, over the railway lines that connect Turbhe, Sanpada, and Juinagar railway stations.

This project started in May 2019 and its completion cost ₹156 crore. This newly expanded ROB spans a total length of 1,732 metres. It also marks a significant step forward in improving traffic efficiency and connectivity. The Sion Panvel Special State Highway stretches 25 kilometres.

It serves as a vital link from Sion to Panvel, passing through Mankhurd and Turbhe via Navi Mumbai. This highway holds immense importance as it connects Mumbai not only to Pune and Goa but also to Karnataka, Telangana, and the Konkan region.

The project faced its fair share of challenges during execution, including the presence of existing utilities. The de-launching of foot overbridges and the intricacies of constructing a railway overbridge presented a struggle as well. Upon its anticipated opening for vehicular traffic, the widened Turbhe ROB is expected to significantly enhance the commuting experience for travellers.

The completion of this project certainly underscores MahaRail’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure. It will improve connectivity and reduce congestion along the Sion Panvel Highway.

As per the reports from The Indian Express, a representative from MahaRail shared that the expanded Turbhe Rail/Road Over Bridge (ROB) will offer seamless movement for vehicles. MahaRail undertook the project a few years ago and managed to complete it despite facing significant challenges, the spokesperson affirmed.

This project promises a smoother and more efficient commute for travellers across Maharashtra’s key destinations.
