Ten patients lost their lives, and at least 11 staff members suffered burn injuries after a fire broke out at the trauma care unit of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, on March 16, 2026. Several fire engines rushed to the spot to begin rescue operations. Here’s what we know so far about this incident.

Fire Breaks Out At SCB Medical College & Hospital In Odisha

According to a report by NDTV, the fire at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack,  Odisha, happened around 3 am on March 16, 2026. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi visited the hospital after the incident and confirmed the casualties. 10 patients have unfortunately lost their lives, while at least 11 staff members suffered burn injuries. 

Reportedly, seven patients died inside the ICU, while three others lost their lives while being shifted to other wards during the rescue operation. The patients who were on ventilator support died due to suffocation caused by smoke.

According to The Times of India, the fire was caused by a suspected short circuit in the trauma care intensive care unit (ICU). Several patients were rescued safely as firefighters and hospital staff rushed to control the blaze. Multiple fire engines were involved in the rescue operation.

₹25 Lakh Compensation Announced

Reportedly, 23 employees of SCB Medical College and Hospital who were part of the rescue operation were hospitalised as well. They apparently suffered health complications, including smoke inhalation, which caused difficulty in breathing. The injured patients will now receive proper treatment.

The Odisha Chief Minister has also announced an ex gratia compensation of ₹25 lakh for the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the fire. Moreover, a judicial probe into the incident has also been ordered by the Odisha Chief Minister after he held meetings with senior officials. Action will be taken if the inquiry finds anyone guilty.
