Bengaluru, once a city renowned for its pleasant climate and scenic lakes, is now facing an alarming water crisis. As summer approaches, residents, especially those in peripheral areas, are preparing for a harsh season as groundwater levels are predicted to plummet. This has led to growing concerns about the sustainability of the city’s water resources. Over 80 wards including K R Puram, Mahadevapura, and others, will face a severe water shortage, with some regions expecting a 20-25 meter drop in groundwater levels as early as February.

To tackle the pressing issue, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) formed a special task force, including IISc scientists and groundwater experts, to create a sustainable action plan. This initiative came after Bengaluru’s water scarcity during last year’s summer, which attracted global attention. While the city’s water distribution struggles are well-documented, another critical aspect of Bengaluru’s water crisis remains largely neglected—its lakes.

Major water bodies like Bellandur and Varthur, spanning 800 acres each, are in poor condition despite years of promises from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to rejuvenate them. These lakes could play a vital role in replenishing the city’s groundwater if properly revived, but their continued neglect only worsens the water scarcity crisis.

What The Netizens Are Saying

The news of Bengaluru facing a severe water crisis has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media. Netizens are expressing concern and outrage over the situation, with many pointing fingers at the government and authorities for their inaction. There is also a sense of frustration and anger over the lack of preparedness and planning on the part of the authorities, with many questioning how such a situation could have been allowed to arise.

Last year, the situation was quite worse with the water crisis in Bengaluru – it impacted schools, coaching centres, and even industrial and commercial sectors as well. People were advised to limit water usage, and apartment complexes also introduced strict rules and fines to manage the water shortage, while residents of Bengaluru exchanged ideas on how to use water more judiciously.
