Palitana, The World’s First Vegetarian City
Palitana is best known for Shatrunjaya Hill, home to over 800 intricately carved temples. This sacred site has been a focal point of Jainism for centuries. The first Jain Tirthankara, Ādinātha, is said to have meditated here. His legacy is deeply embedded in the numerous temples adorning the hill. The climb to these temples involves over 3,750 stone steps. It is certainly a challenging yet rewarding pilgrimage, offering breathtaking views and a profound spiritual experience.
The history of Palitana is rich and deeply intertwined with Jain legends. After being established in 1194, the city later developed into a princely state under the British Raj. Palitana’s religious significance was reinforced in 1656. In 2014, Palitana made history by becoming the first city in the world to legally enforce vegetarianism. The sale and consumption of meat, fish, and eggs were outlawed, along with related occupations such as fishing and animal penning. This decision reflects the deep-rooted Jain principles of non-violence and respect for all living beings.
