The Jammu and Kashmir government is intensifying efforts to promote the Parihaspora Archaeological Site in Baramulla as a premier heritage tourism destination. In response to an enquiry from Pattan MLA Javid Riyaz, the Tourism Department confirmed that the site features prominently in the region’s heritage tourism map and is being actively marketed through promotional videos, brochures and representation at travel exhibitions.
Parihaspora Archaeological Site: All You Need To Know
Locally known as ‘Kani Shahar,’ Parihaspora holds exceptional historical significance as Kashmir’s capital from 695 to 731 AD. Established by Lalitaditya Muktapida of the Karkota dynasty, this majestic city is situated 20 kilometres northwest of Srinagar on a plateau above the Jhelum River.
This historical site is documented in Kalhana’s 12th-century historical text Rajatarangini. According to these chronicles, Lalitaditya constructed his royal residence alongside four temples. This includes the Muktakeshva (Vishnu temple), the Parihaskesana temple, a copper Buddha statue, and the renowned Mattan temple in southern Kashmir.
To enhance visitor experience, the government established a cafeteria at the site in 2017, though renovation plans are scheduled in the upcoming financial year’s Capital Expenditure Budget. These infrastructure improvements form part of broader initiatives to boost tourism across the region.
More Than Just Preservation Of Heritage Culture
The site’s promotion represents more than the preservation of cultural heritage; it offers future generations and international visitors an opportunity to explore Kashmir’s ancient glory. As a testament to the region’s rich past, Parihaspora provides valuable insights into the cultural roots of the Kashmir Valley.
By investing in restoration and promotional activities, the Jammu and Kashmir government aims to position Parihaspora as a key attraction for history enthusiasts and cultural explorers. The site exemplifies how heritage conservation can contribute to tourism development whilst ensuring that historical landmarks remain accessible to those seeking to understand Kashmir’s diverse cultural legacy.
As part of ongoing tourism development initiatives, Parihaspora is poised to become an essential destination for visitors wishing to experience the magnificent architectural and cultural heritage of this historically significant former capital.
