Paris Olympics: Manu Bhaker Wins First Medal For India; Gets Bronze In 10m Pistol Shooting

In a moment of pride, India has won its first medal in the Paris Olympics 2024. Manu Bhaker bagged a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event on Sunday. She became India’s first female Olympic medalist in shooting. Trailing Kim Yeji with 0.1,  while she got a bronze, Kim won a silver medal. And her Korean compatriot Oh Ye Jin bagged a gold medal.

Manu Bhaker Becomes 1st Indian Woman To Bag Olympic Medal For Shooting

Manu Bhaker secured a bronze in the 10m pistol event flaunting a score of 221.7 at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre. After 12 years, India is celebrating a shooting medal. Last, Gagan Narang and Vijay won shooting medals in London. Manu finished third in the qualification round. She is India’s first woman in 20 years to reach an Olympic shooting final in an individual event. Suma Shirur did so in 2004.

In the Tokyo Olympics 2021, her pistol malfunctioned during the qualifications and she was in tears. She has redeemed herself with a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. A Commonwealth Games champion in the 10m air pistol event, she has won laurels for India. She is the youngest Indian to bag a gold medal at the ISSF World Cup. She won her Paris Olympics quota by ranking 5th in the women’s 25m pistol event at the 2023 Asian Shooting Championships.

Stalwarts from India have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate the champion shooter who has made India proud in the Paris Summer Olympics. From Abhinav Bindra to Gautam Gambhir, sports stars congratulated her.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated her on the historic win.

Manu has become the fifth Indian shooter after Abhinav Bindra, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Vijay Kumar and Gagan Narang to bag an Olympic medal in shooting. She is the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal. And we congratulate her for her incredible feat!
