At least five passengers and two crew members on a Mumbai-bound Air India flight from London fell ill on Monday. They experienced symptoms of what appears to be food poisoning, including nausea and dizziness. Upon landing, two passengers and two cabin crew members were taken to the medical room as they continued to feel unwell.
Passengers & Crew Members Fall Ill On Air India’s London-Mumbai Flight
According to The Times of India, Air India confirmed the incident of seven people falling ill mid-air on Air India’s London-Mumbai flight. They further mentioned that Flight AI 130 landed safely in Mumbai and the four people, who still felt unwell, received immediate medical assistance. As per Air India’s statement, the five passengers and two crew members felt “dizzy and nauseous during different phases of the flight.”
Some aviation experts have shared that these symptoms can be caused by a cabin depressurisation problem. However, if there was a lack of oxygen in the flight, then oxygen masks from the flight’s overhead would have dropped, which did not happen. This makes many suspect it to be a case of food poisoning.
It is to be noted that the pilots on Air India’s London-Mumbai flight were not affected by any sickness that seemed to have caused distress to multiple passengers and crew members.

Matter Now Under Investigation
The airline has not commented on any of these speculations and has reassured that they are “investigating the incident and have duly notified the regulator”, that is, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The Mumbai-bound Air India flight took off from London’s Heathrow airport. The people who fell ill during the flight were provided medical assistance upon landing for further examination and were later discharged.
This recent incident has added to Air India’s growing concerns. After the unfortunate Ahmedabad plane crash earlier in the month, multiple flights by the airline have been cancelled (due to various reasons) and routes have been discontinued. They have even temporarily curtailed operations on several widebody international services.
