It’s no secret that women are allowed to travel for free in the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation buses. Popularly known as TSRTC buses, the scheme put forward by the state government has, however, now been challenged. Yes, a Public Interest Litigation, also known as PIL has been filed in the Telangana High Court against the scheme. And it challenges women from travelling for free on these buses!

According to a report by Saisat.com, it was revealed that a PIL has been filed with the Telangana High Court challenging the state government’s scheme for women. Under the scheme, women are allowed to travel for free in TSRTC buses, however, the PIL states the inconvenience faced by genuine passengers. Yes, claiming a violation of article 15, the PIL, which A Harender Kumar has filed, emphasises that genuine passengers are suffering due to unnecessary travel.

Yes, in the PIL filed by this private employee and Bandlaguda resident, it is mentioned that the foundation of TSRTC’s operations was derived from the Road Transport Act of 1950. It was aimed at empowering the Union Government to frame laws. Not to mention, allowing women to travel for free in these buses contradicts Article 15 of the Indian Constitution. As a result, the PIL claimed that it is violating the same. Therefore, he further asserted that this causes a lot of inconvenience to genuine passengers, especially since there is a surge in commuters.

For those who are still unaware, this scheme promises free travel for girls, women, and trans people on buses. In fact, it was also one of the promises made by the Congress during the assembly elections. However, with this scheme’s introduction, there has been an increased passenger load on the buses, creating inconvenience for travellers. As a result, it has also been a topic of discontent amongst sections of society.
