Travel in Africa is set to be revolutionised by Nigeria’s fast e-visa system. According to the interior minister, Nigeria is automating the approval and issuance of its electronic visas in an attempt to increase tourism and business. Under the proposed approach, travellers can apply short-stay visas online, which will be granted within 24 to 48 hours.
Advantages Of Nigeria’s E-Visa System
The goal of this automation is to cut down on the long wait time that tourists experience when they arrive, which might put an end to a flourishing business for intermediaries who assist travellers in navigating the immigration process. Travellers can apply online for short-stay visas under the proposed arrangement, and they will be approved in 24 to 48 hours. There is no longer a requirement for a physical sticker at the airport because the e-visa will be emailed to the applicant’s email upon approval.
Nigeria’s interior minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, stated on X after a department meeting on Tuesday that the proposed visa policy will facilitate economic transactions, increase tourism, and fortify bilateral and multilateral ties with other nations.
Contactless Passport Applications
The government has worked to streamline the visa application procedure for foreigners and make it easier for Nigerians to obtain passports since President Tinubu took office in May 2023. One such initiative is the establishment of a contactless passport application system for Nigerians living overseas.
Currently being implemented by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to expedite passport renewal for the Nigerian diaspora, a contactless passport application system for Nigerians living abroad refers to an online platform where Nigerian citizens living abroad can apply for passport renewals entirely digitally, without having to physically visit an embassy or immigration office, allowing them to complete the process remotely through a dedicated website or app.
