PM Modi & German Chancellor Fly Kite During Intl Kite Festival Inauguration In Ahmedabad

Ahead of Makar Sankranti, Ahmedabad’s skyline along the Sabarmati once again turned vibrant as the International Kite Festival returned to the city. As Uttarayan celebrations took over, the festival brought people together in a shared display of colour and joy. This was made even more special this year as Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tried his hand at kite flying.

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz inaugurated the International Kite Festival at Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront. As reported by DD News, the two leaders were welcomed with traditional Gujarati scarves on arrival. The event featured live music and vibrant performances, with artists from across the state presenting folk dances and music that highlighted Gujarat’s rich cultural heritage.

Coming to the highlight of the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the German Chancellor also tried their hand at kite flying. They were seen touring the venue in an open vehicle and flying kites from there. The Prime Minister flew a specially designed kite bearing the message “Bharat – Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” reflecting India’s philosophy of the world as one family. The sky was also filled with kites in the tricolour, along with designs featuring Hindu deities and motifs symbolising friendship between India and Germany.

More About International Kite Festival 2026

Back with the 2026 edition, the International Kite Festival is here with 135 participants from 50 countries. From across India, 65 flyers will be participating and hundreds of local participants from Gujarat are also expected to participate in the event.

The kite festival will continue until January 14. Over the past two days, participants have visited destinations such as Rajkot, Surat, Dholavira, and the Statue of Unity in Narmada. Through the International Kite Festival, Gujarat Tourism aims to draw visitors to key cultural and tourist landmarks across the state, including Dholavira and the Statue of Unity.
