On March 10, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated a slew of ambitious airport projects. One of which was Gwalior Airport’s newly constructed terminal—Rajmata Vijayraje Scindia Terminal— which features a majestic statue of Queen Vijayaraje. The new airport is embellished with heritage motifs and it’s truly a sight to behold.
PM Modi Inaugurates New Terminal At Gwalior Airport Built In 16 Months
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav inaugurated Gwalior Airport’s new terminal— Rajmata Vijayraje Scindia Terminal. During his virtual address, PM Modi hailed the new terminal. He announced the opening of new terminals at Jabalpur and Gwalior airports. Furthermore, he informed that rapid progress has been made for 16 airports across India. In just 16 months, a new terminal was constructed at the Vijayaraje Scindia Airport in Gwalior.
Apart from the new terminal at Gwalior Airport, PM Modi also virtually laid the foundation stone for 16 airports in India. In the media address, he stated that he is working at a fast pace to make India a developed nation by 2047. When it comes to Madhya Pradesh, the event was attended by many dignitaries like the Central Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and the Governor.

Can Handle 3 Times More Passengers Than Old Airport
Constructed at an estimated cost of ₹498 crore, the new terminal at Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Airport in Gwalior embodies a fusion of history, culture and modernity. Spread over 20,000 square metres, this new grand terminal building has a peak hour capacity of about 1400 passengers. This is 3 times higher compared to the old airport which can accommodate about 2 million passengers every year.
The new terminal has a statue of Queen Vijayaraje, popularly known as Rajmata of Gwalior. A prominent personality in Indian politics, she was the consort of the last ruling Maharaja of Gwalior, Jivajirao Scindia. For residents in Gwalior, it is a matter of pride to have a statue of the Rajmata of Gwalior at the new terminal. Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated during the event that the laying of foundation stones and inaugurations at so many airports happening simultaneously across India, is something that has never happened in 75 years.
