Pope Francis developed pneumonia in both his lungs recently and has been battling a severe respiratory infection. Reportedly, he told his close aides that he may not survive this time and “his end is near.” However, as per the latest update by the Vatican, the Pope is showing signs of “slight improvement,” and is alert. He is, however, expected to remain in the hospital as he battles the infection.
Pope Francis’s Health Improves Slightly As He Battles Double Pneumonia
The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis, 88, is suffering from double pneumonia and asthmatic bronchitis. He is undergoing cortisone antibiotic treatment. On February 20, the Vatican reported that the Pope has shown “slight improvement” and is not on a ventilator. They added that he is also moving around his hospital room, doing paperwork, and making calls.
On February 14, Pope Francis was hospitalised after his bronchitis worsened. He was, reportedly, struggling with breathing for many days. According to the Hindustan Times, his condition is believed to have been complicated by his advanced age. However, as per a Vatican spokesperson, despite his health woes, the Pope remains in good spirits.

Possibility Of A Resignation Soon?
While Pope Francis’s health is improving, many reports suggest that cardinals have acknowledged the possibility of a resignation. While addressing a press conference recently, Cardinal Juan Josè Omella said that Popes, bishops, priests, and communities change all the time. Associated Press also reported another cardinal, Gianfranco Ravasi, commenting on the possibility of resignation, suggesting that Pope Francis might follow in the footsteps of Pope Benedict XVI and step down if he becomes too ill.
Pope Benedict was the first pope, in over 600 years, to retire when he stepped down in 2013. He said that he didn’t have the physical strength to “carry on the rigours of the globe-trotting papacy” due to his health concerns. It is to be noted that Pope Francis or the Vatican hasn’t commented on any possibility of a resignation yet.
We pray for Pope Francis’s hearty recovery.
