Several food joints across the UAE shut amid the pandemic last year, and one such restaurant that closed temporarily was the iconic Thai food joint Sticky rice. And now, after being shut for more than a month, Sticky Rice has announced that it will soon be back in the business. Yep, you read that right! The popular food joint has reopened its Jumeirah Village Circle branch. However, keeping the current situation in mind- now only food pick-ups and deliveries will be open.
Sticky Rice Opens For Pick-ups And Deliveries
The family-run restaurant closed at the end of January because of the covid-19 cases. Post that, in February, Amena Rakkuson, better known as the ‘mama’ behind the restaurant, died after contracting Covid-19. And finally, after going through a lot, the Thai food joint reopens again, and on this, Mo Abedin – the owner of the food joint, wants to thank the UAE community for their support during a difficult time.
Speaking about this with The National, he said,
“Mama was the heart and soul of the business. Everything was managed by her and, when she died, it was difficult for us to take over. She left some big shoes to fill.”
UAE-ites Help The Restaurant In Difficult Times
The restaurant was struggling financially, and the expenses were only going up. And that’s when they started taking pre-orders for a plush toy inspired by Rakkuson’s favourite mascot “Kew”. Abedin announced the sale of the 20-centimetre-tall plush toy on social media and was amazed and grateful for the positive response.
On this, he said,
“The entire community came together. There were some insanely generous contributions, to say the least. The pre-orders allowed us to get back on our feet again.”
And with the restaurant opening soon, Abedin wants to remind people not to let their guard down when protecting themselves against Covid-19. He said,
“If you want to continue eating in restaurants and having normal dining experiences, follow the rules and respect the people who are working day and night to feed you.”
Well, we are so happy that Sticky Rice is back in business.
